Increase In Number Of Children Waiting For Essential Medical Equipment – McGrath. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South Central Michael McGrath has expressed concern over delays in providing children with essential medical equipment across Cork and Kerry.Increase Essential Medical Equipment.
New figures provided to Deputy McGrath revealed that more than 500 children across the two counties are on a waiting list for items such as wheelchairs, bath and shower equipment and specialised clothing.
Deputy McGrath explained, “I find is very worrying that in the space of two months the number of children waiting for essential equipment has risen from 420 to 508. Almost half of the 508 are on the waiting list for over 6 months and 73 of them have been waiting more than a year for specific devices.
“This is a deeply distressing situation for these children and their families. It is also unfair and cruel to expect young people to wait so long for basic equipment. It is impacting on their every day lives and is most likely curtailing their independence.
“What is particularly worrying is the fact that the situation appears to be getting worse, not better, and as the budgetary pressures on the health service increase coming into the autumn and winter, I am gravely concerned that these waiting lists will deteriorate further.
“Minister Harris needs to examine the worsening situation and decide on measures to reduce waiting times for children”.
